Temporary Water Disinfectant Change Scheduled for March
The North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) will temporarily change its water disinfectant process from March 2 to March 30, 2026, as part of annual system maintenance to ensure safe, high-quality drinking water. This routine change helps maintain the regional water system and prepares it for warmer weather when bacterial growth can increase.
During this period, NTMWD will suspend the use of chloramine (a mix of chlorine and ammonia) and use chlorine-only disinfection. While the water may have a more noticeable chlorine taste or odor, it remains safe to drink and meets all state and federal water quality standards.
Key points:
- This change is a common, EPA-recommended practice for water systems using chloramines
- NTMWD has performed this annual maintenance for over 15 years
- Communities may see fire hydrant flushing to help move water through the system faster
- Simple ways to reduce chlorine taste or odor include refrigerating water overnight or adding a slice of citrus
