Fire Safety

Surviving a house fire will depend on your preparation, awareness, and escape plan. Please consider these basic safety and prevention tips to safeguard your home:

Have a Plan

  • Review all the ways to exit each room of your home.
  • Develop a fire escape plan with family members.
  • Pick a meeting place outside your home.
  • Practice your plan with small children regularly.

Safeguard your Home

  • Install smoke alarms outside the bedrooms on each level.
  • Test the smoke alarms once a month.
  • Replace the batteries in the smoke alarms at least once a year. Try to replace them when you change your clocks twice a year!
  • Install a residential sprinkler system.
  • Make sure safety bars on windows can be opened from inside your home.
  • Learn how and when to use a fire extinguisher.

Get out Safely

  • Escape the dwelling and go to your meeting place.
  • No one should ever go back inside for any reason.
